First of all, I hope you and your loved ones are doing well. Is your state, county or city one of the COVID stay at home states? Staying at home is harder than I ever thought it would be. As adults, our lives are usually so packed with our “must do” and “want to do” activities. It’s rare to take time to stay at home and slow down.

Below are some ideas, I hope will help you through the next couple of weeks!

Financial – Stay At Home Activities

  1. File your taxes – if you haven’t already done so. Experts say that the sooner you file your taxes, the less opportunity there is for identity theft.
  2. Review your subscription services – If you aren’t regularly using a subscription, cancel it. This can free up some money for other uses.
  3. Pay off your debt – If you are still getting a regular paycheck, work on paying off your debt.
  4. Start an Emergency Fund – Take the money you would have spent on dining out, coffee, dry cleaning, manicures, pedicures, and haircuts and put it into your emergency fund.
  5. Read a book about financial awareness and retirement. I just received Suze Orman’s new book, Ultimate Retirement Guide for 50+. I can’t wait to dig into it!
  6. Make a budget – take time to inventory your income, recurring monthly expenses (mortgage, car, gas, insurance, etc.), quarterly expenses and other expenses.

Fitness – Stay At Home Activities

  1. Walk your dog. If you don’t have a dog, try to get out and go for a walk. Practice social distancing, but it does us so much good to get outside.
  2. Go for a hike, kayaking or a bike ride. Look for activities that you can do by yourself or with your immediate family and don’t involve contact. Check on your state or local rules for Staying at Home before you go out.
  3. The YMCA is offering free exercise videos. I’ve always wondered if I’d like Tai Chi but I didn’t want to spend the money in case I don’t like it. So, I’m taking the YMCA’s Tai Chi class!
  4. Garden. You can order seeds online and start them indoors or if the weather cooperates, do your planting outdoors.
  5. Meditate or try breathing exercises. Check out these meditation apps.

Fun – Stay at Home Activities

1. Puzzles – Jigsaw puzzles are one of my boredom buster activities! I ordered a couple of puzzles and am tackling them a little at a time. I also ordered a puzzle board. I LOVE this puzzle board because I can fold it up and put it away without ruining my progress on the puzzle. My parents have one too!

2. Read a book. Turn off your electronics and the TV and read a book. If it’s nice outside, maybe you can sit on your porch or patio, sip a glass of wine and read.

3. Watch Christmas movies. I know it’s not Christmas, but the Hallmark Channel is showing Christmas movies the weekend of March 27 and 28. Binge-watch Downton Abbey or the Crown.

4. Connect with friends. Call, video chat or text. Maybe plan a virtual happy hour. I’m invited to one tomorrow night over Zoom! You can also go “old school” and send a letter. I received a letter from a friend and it really brightened my day!

5. Take a bubble bath, give your self a manicure or pedicure, do an at-home facial. Pamper yourself.

Food – Fun and Fabulous

1. Make a grocery list. Since we have to moderate our trips to the store, keep a running list of the groceries you need so you don’t forget anything. Don’t forget your prescriptions!

2. Look for recipes on Pinterest, Weight Watchers or other sites. Try a new recipe. Maybe it’s comfort food your craving or you want to try out a healthy treat. Chocolate chip cookies…. guilty!

3. Do meal planning. My son is really good at planning out meals for the week and prepping on Sundays. I need to get better at this and what better time than now!

Other Tips for Coping at Home

1. Turn off the news. You can stay informed but limit your viewing to once or twice a day. Don’t watch the news right before bed. Watch a movie or a new series. I love HGTV!

2. Help others. It’s the small things. If you find toilet paper, you can give your neighbor a couple of rolls. Maybe pick up a few items or a prescription for a friend who can’t go out. Check up on your friends and neighbors.

3. Take a class or learn a new skill. Check out online courses like Speed Reading, The Colored Pencil Drawing Course, Creating Bath and Body Products, or Sourdough Bread Baking 101. There are so many inexpensive or free online resources. Check it out!
